"But we've been here for thousands of years!"
"Sorry, no flag, no country!"
Big hoopla running around LJ, and for that matter, the US, about the
9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruling the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional.
And you know, that's fine with me. I still know the words after all these years, and I have no problem repeating them, but they're really just words. They're not that old, they're not from the sacred text of the Constitution, merely a law that clocks in at just under the half-century mark. My grandparents never repeated them in school, it was brand-new when my parents were in grade school. Just words. And my comfort with them is personal.
I think the Court is right. There are more people in this nation than just Christians, more people than monotheists, more people than theists. Belief should never be legislated. If there are people who don't like these words, who cannot swear by god or a god, let's find them some new words, a new pledge for the new millennium.
And while we're at it? Let's not lose the 'liberty and justice for all" bit.
