I last saw my brain hightailing it for Arda...
Tolkein is the best thing since sliced cheese to geek out over. He left so many little dribs and drabs all over the place - ragged edges that hinted at a larger world. And he didn't leave all the magic to the Istari or the elves.
Ferinstance: Beorn, a man of the north, was a skinshifter. Could turn into a bear. At the end of the Third Age! Not related to ring-gifts, no elven blood, just pretty damn cool. And then his descendants could too.
I admit, I have a pair of OCs. Neither of them is a half-elf, though I did play with their ancestry. And some shieldmaidens. No more than a dozen. But really, I wouldn't have to go to these lengths if Tolkein had actually populated his world with women!
Is it me, or is Eomer the only man with a living female relative? Nope - Imrahil has a daughter in the appendix. And further, I think that the only reason Grima got his claws into Theoden is because Morwen Steelsheen (Theoden's mom, and a Gondorian, so a little longer-lived than the Rohir) finally died, because otherwise she'd have bitch-slapped him back to Saruman. (Plus, I like giving Eowyn at least one female, and a strong one, at that, in her young life.)
