Food Meme
Because the cats woke me up at 4, mom needed help to the bathroom and I can't sleep:
1. Made biscuits from scratch? Yes.
2. Fried fresh okra? Nope.
3. Made sourdough bread? Oh, bread... I used to have a starter, but it died when I started working downtown and my commute got longer. I also had to give up my community garden plot.
4. Fried chicken? Yes, but a while ago.
5. Made spaghetti sauce from scratch? Oh yes.
6. Made any kind of yeast bread? All the time. My favorite these days is a simple no-knead bread.
7. Baked a cake from scratch? Yes. Easier than you'd think!
8. Made icing from scratch? Yes.
9. Cooked a pot roast with all the veg? Yes, it's a good crockpot recipe.
10. Made chili from scratch? Yes, but not a fan of chili in general. (It's the beans...)
11. Made a meatloaf? Oddly, no. Never a staple growing up, so I've never wanted to.
12. Made scalloped potatoes? Yes.
13. Made mac/cheese from scratch? My mother did all the time. Love it.
14. Made a jello salad? EWWW. I mean, I have, but ick.
15. Made peanut brittle? So this was fun: My junior year of high school, the science class was biology, but right before Christmas that year we had an assignment that was more like chemistry. We were given instructions with precise measurements and all that - more like a lab than a recipe and the end result was peanut brittle. I'd never made it before (or since). Our group, the Uppity Women, had the best brittle in the class. (I remember the failures more - there were some that were charred, some still oozy and liquid... lots of people didn't follow the directions.)
16. Made fudge? Can't think that I have, actually.
17. Made cookies from scratch? Oh yes.
18. Cooked a pot of beans from dried beans? Nope - not fond of beans.
19. Cooked a pot of greens? Not as such. I'll wilt spinach, but mostly I'm a cold salad sort of greens-eater.
20. Made cornbread from scratch? Yes, but why bother when the mixes are good.
21. Made a pie dough from scratch? All the time, and especially at the holidays. I'd mix it up and Dad would roll out the crust.
22. Cooked a whole turkey? Yes.
23. Snapped green beans and cooked them? Green beans are delicious! I do like the little haricots verts where you don't have to snap them.
24. Made mashed potatoes from scratch? Yes - I prefer a dirty mashed potato with the skins in. And lots of butter and a little cream.
25. What’s the most people you have (alone) prepared a whole meal for? 120ish - I was the feast cook for our college SCA event one year.
26. Poached an egg? Yes, though I prefer scrambled.
27. Made pancakes from scratch? Yes - for American pancakes I prefer a mix, though. Crepes and Swedish pancakes and other pancake variations, I'll cook from scratch.
28. Roasted vegetables in the oven instead of boiling them? YES. Jeebus - you boil potatoes and not much else. Roasted brussel sprouts with bacon are DELICIOUS.
29. Made fresh pasta? Yes, but not often. It's much easier to get fresh pasta from this cool place at the farmer's market, or even the grocery store.
30. Made croissants from scratch? I looked at the recipe once and noped out of the immense amount of work it'd take to get the flaky pastry right.
31. Made tuna salad? Yes - started when I was a kid.
32. Fried fish? No - we'd always go to the fish place for fish and chips - never bothered to make at home. Cooking fish at home was more often pan-fry, roasting or poaching.
33. Made baked beans? Nope.
34. Made ice cream from scratch? Couple times - we had an ice cream maker that eventually just gathered dust.
35. Made jam or jelly? As an adult, I started canning with a friend. We started with asparagus pickles, but expanded our repertoire to some very fancy jams as well.
