Mixed Blessings
Jun. 21st, 2001 04:58 pmI got handed my first big project today - take a Filemaker database and kludge it into Word or Excel format. This means they trust me, and they want to keep me busy, and at the same time, I can't just read fic all day. (Not that I have, but, y'know, I could have.)
Of course, Bob gave it to me at 4pm, and I'm only here a half day tomorrow (and maybe not even that, depending on the shuttle) That's 3 days to let the idea percolate in the back of my brain. (or sit there and rot. We'll see if we have coffee or compost come Monday.)
I need to finish laundry and packing tonight. I don't think I'll haul my laptop with, and it's summer, so with luck, I'll be packing real light. I'm not even sure about the jacket - I normally prefer my black cloak - it's better than any three airplane blankets, and it's comfy, but... Dude - this is Kansas. At midsummer.
Windbreaker. The one with pockets, so I can bring my walkman, and some cds, and a book or two, though which, I don't know. I've been going through my library at a pretty hefty rate lately - and I'm almost sure there are some I could actually get rid of, horrifying as the thought may be. Only the bad ones - like the Daughters of Bast piece of crap that mixes Celtic and Egyptian mythology, and has Bast wandering around in Gaul or something, and really messes up both history and mythology enough to torque me off. Eww.
The others - the good ones that I would happily collect duplicates of, just to shove them at people, and say 'Read this! It'll open your mind. No, not quite like brain surgery, but you won't need the anesthesia, either.' Those I'll keep, at least one copy of, and an eye out for more. (The next booksale's not until September. But Powell's is always there, and it's just a few hours south...)
Found a 4 bedroom duplex, but I'd have to move in by August 15th. Which could be a possibility. I could swing half the month's rent by myself, I think, though it'd be a stretch. Though first, last and the pet deposit... at least they take cats. Two months to go - geez! Is it really only that?
Or is only appropriate. I should be looking in July for an August move-in, and in August for a September move-in, and I feel as if I'm jumping the gun just a wee bit. Not that that's a bad thing. Or a good thing. Just a thing.
Like anything.
