Fandom, not canon
May. 17th, 2019 08:14 pm"Why would you waste money on a service that carries Game of Thrones when you could just absorb the plot of each episode as hundreds of furious live-tweets. I have been consuming the show in this fashion for at least four seasons, as the whale consumes krill."

I have a first edition hardback of Game of Thrones that I never started, having realized that it was a series without an end when it was first published (It's all Robert Jordan's fault for dying), and I've been waiting patiently (HAH) for GRR Martin to finish it... I of course have since stumbled into crossovers and fanfic, but haven't read the books or watched the show.
It's amazing how much you can absorb through fanfic and wikis. We have a GoT deadpool based on the current season: who dies (EVERYONE YOU LOVE), who lives, who kills Cersei and who ends up on the Iron Throne. I'm the only one not actively watching... and I'm winning as of last week.
Why yes, this amuses me.
When I first entered fandom, it was still a hidden hobby - people feared outting, and it was the lone brave soul who would admit it in public. Now, I'll admit to the office mates that yeah, I don't watch the show, but I know the canon through other means, and heck yeah I read fanfic (it's better than the last episode by far... or so I have to assume from the furious live-tweets.)
