Airplane fandom and other trivia
Aug. 22nd, 2001 10:12 amI realized it last night, when Dad and I sat down to dinner with the two Jims he'd met through the Aero Commander mailing list he's on. Dad met these guys through a mailing list. He happily chatted with them for two hours about planes and boats and flying. He may get a ride to Portland with another list member whom he's never met, just to go to a fly-in event for Aero Commander owners and enthusiasts. It's just like media fandom, only with a bigger budget and tangible toys.
I was highly amused. It was all I could do not to giggle helplessly at all three grown-up boys. I managed though - we were at Red Mill, and they have good burgers. Much better than Daly's, though not so close. I just took another bite, snitched another french fry, and swallowed my mirth with a sip of butterscotch shake.
So, Dad's still around, and we've managed not to get me boxes for three days running. He's getting bored though, with no meetings to run off to Vancouver for. He promised to head for a box shop today and start in on my paperbacks. Good Dad. Wonderful Dad. He even understands (or is willing to pander to) my obsession with keeping the books I've alphabetized by author in order.
Things at work may be picking up a little from the mind-numbing boredom that's driven me to read nsync slash lately. Son of Small Fry finally hit the web yesterday (Lori told me when it started showing up on the lists - the lists that I'm not subbed to - weeks ago,) but I stayed up until 1 reading it last night, so it didn't really help the whole boredom-at-work thing or the getting-sucked-into-boybandia thing. Oh well.
I tried installing a Zip drive into my PC this morning - they're not really supposed to make noises like a lawnmower chewing up a squeaky toy the dog left on the lawn, so I'm rather glad I tested it on a random zip disk lying around instead of my precious story disk.
Oh, right - the non-boring work thing. I may be taking over the department site. Like, the web page and all. <blink> Kinda scary in a oh-they-like-me-wait-I-need-to-relearn-this-crap sort of way.
