In doing the squee/rant meme that's been going around,
cereta hit one of my toggles (it's not a fully-fledged button ;) here.
Because, yes, Batman is a severely damaged individual, but I don't think he's a serial pedophile either. It's someone else's playground, so when I read Batman/Robin slash, I'll accept the premise for the story (and with many of the authors out there, it's just a slick slide into the hotness,) but when I come away from it, back to my own head, Batman is once again fucked up, but in another way.
Part of it is Batman's overwhelming moral code - the same one that prevents him from killing the Joker, or even just letting him die - would also prevent him from sexual contact with anyone under his aegis. So, not just the Robins, but the Batgirls, Huntress (to a degree), and most of Gotham's citizenry. He'd need a contemporary, an equal of some sort, and we know there are blessed few of those running around.
In my head, any attempt at a regular relationship with a regular person is immediately doomed. That leaves the costumes (who are more fun anyway.) My top three are Catwoman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Catwoman is the immediate candidate, but her own need for independence immediately clashes with Batman's clinginess, and I don't see them in a committed monogamous relationship. Something like the Duncan/Amanda relationship springs to mind.
Superman, too, is obvious to the slasher at large: he's a close friend, and while Batman is (perhaps understandably) wary of Clark's powers, his innate goodness has got to be intensely attractive to Batman. Then too, the spectre of het raises its head, and my view of Clark intrudes: I think he's deeply, monogamously committed to Lois Lane, and that leaves precious little room for Batman - who would not be nearly so good for Clark as Clark would be for him.
So we come down to the other side of the Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman trinity. Most of the time she ends up with Superman, which ignores the whole Lois thing on his side, and completely ignores Diana's background. To her, Clark is very much like the gods she is used to: powerful, and untouchable in the sense that getting involved with him would be a Bad Idea. Batman would be to her much more approachable: a hero and a prince, and therefore her equal. Reciprocally, while the whole mythic/god thing would probably put off the logical scientist in him, I see Batman drawn to Diana in much the same way he would be to Clark.
And all of this is of course assuming that Batman is well adjusted enough to have a mature relationship in the first place. Heh.
Robins later, when I don't have the bossman hovering.
