Master and Commander
Nov. 14th, 2003 09:04 amHot guys go to see this movie. I got to the theatre at a little after 5, because I knew there were going to be more free passes than seats, and wow with the eye-candy. I held the line position just open enough to let people use the kiosk to pay for their parking, so the boys behind me sort of amorphed it out a bit, and between making sure the kiosk people didn't poach in the line, and eyeing the pair of hotties behind me, I wasn't exactly reading fast.
Yes, folks, I finished the book (Far Side of the World, which is the 10th book in the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian) not twenty minutes before the movie started. Two things: beyond the basic premise, the events are nothing like the book, and yet, it holds true to the spirit of the book, which is very naval, and very buddy-movie.
You wouldn't think it from the trailer, but Aubrey and Maturin? Theirloveissonaval. Or something like that. I predict that the slashers are going to be all over this one. Especially if they go back to the source material. Or cross it over with Hornblower or even Sharpe.
Actually, I'm rather glad that the movie didn't follow the book slavishly. It would have been mind-numbingly dull - a very long chase with no fight scenes, with a side of adultery and murder that Hollywood would have gotten way wrong.
Instead, it was very exciting, with the suspense balancing nicely between the dangers presented by their prey and the dangers of the weather and the sea.
I found Maturin very yummy - and the kid who played Blakeney had the cutest spray of freckles across his nose that quite distracted me from both wanting to give him a hug (for reasons that will become quite obvious) and that he's all of what, twelve! So dirty-old-woman of me.
All-in-all? Excellent movie. Action, adventure, and hot boys. Does it every time.
