The Obligatory Birthday Post
Aug. 13th, 2001 11:32 amIt's a good thing I've got good eyesight. My earphones don't reach from the iMac all the way over to my position in front of the PC, where I tend to write my journal entries, so I've gacked the keyboard to my lap and I'm sort of glancing at the display three feet from my face, and partially obscured by the glare from the overhead florescent lights.
Still, all in all? It's pretty damn comfortable. So add that to my freak quotient.
It's my birthday! Of course, if you're reading this, you'll have guessed that already.
I never really expect much out of a birthday. It's just another day, and the dawning of this particular day isn't that much different from yesterday's, or the day before. August has been a pretty dry season for holidays in general, and it's nice to have my own personal holiday sitting smack in the middle of the summer, but...
It kinda sucked in grade school - I went to a private school, and didn't get along particularly well with the neighborhood kids, so there usually weren't too many people around to invite to the birthday parties. More often than not, Mom&Dad threw a joint party for my brother and I on the 12th (Dru's birthday was the 11th) A midsummer's Christmas, with my parents trying to be scrupulously fair and make sure that we got the same amounts/values of presents so that neither of us would be snubbed or favored over the other.
By high school, I'd sort of given up on big celebrations, but Dru and I had developed an amused tolerance for the weighing in of the gifts. At that point, we knew what they'd been trying to tell us all along, that we were both loved equally and uniquely. And beyond that, presents are pretty much just fluff.
Not that I have anything against presents. I like them, really. I'm wearing Mom's beaded amulet bag today (it holds my staff id, driver's license and bank card quite handily, in addition to being kick ass cool and pretty. (One drawback - Mom fringed it in turquoise and purple, and I really don't have that much turquoise in my wardrobe. I have this odd notion of coordinating my jewelry and my clothes) Rhi and Dragon gave me this neat little dream journal with a lighted pen - it's better than a flashlight in the dark! <g>
I'm being bombarded by birthday wishes and cards. I checked my email this morning, and I had five or six e-cards already, plus a letter from Mom. Happy warm fuzzies, despite the lack of sleep. Yay me!
