Not a single trick-or-treater to our door, and no wonder - the squirrels had snacked on my pumpkins! Nasty little beggars decided to come down and much on my nicely carved little smiley pumpkin and make his eyes all squinty and his top fall off.

(Well, and you have to go through two gates to get to the front door and it's set way back, but I'm pinning the blame on the squirrels, dammit.)

Blue Moon

I didn't even think it, and just days before I'd been thining about blue moons on the bus. I mean, I knew (as of that morning) that it would be a full moon, and the first full moon on Halloween in forever, and wouldn't the pagans just be going apeshit over that? But did I even think about the fact that oh, yes, full moons every 28-29 days, and a moon on the 30th or 31st is a blue moon...

I love the thought of blue moons. It's not a saying that I understood until college, because who these days pays much attention to the moon anymore? We've reached it, and walked upon it, and it's no longer the mystery it was. It lights up the night sky, and we ignore it under our street lights.

But since it's such a mystery, I love knowing about them - it's a secret, an open secret, but it's one I share. A good kind of secret, draped in silver-lit clouds across a shining grey face.

So yesterday I pulled the Jedi costume out of the closet (and the drawer, and the box under the bed). I've got a good bit of medieval clothing I could don, but Jedi seems so much more Halloweeny than anything else I've made or put together.

And it gets such rave reviews. For the one, I love striding down hallways and across campus, my over-robe billowing behind me. I know I stand taller in the robes than out, partially the boots, partially the reaction I'm looking for.

And people notice. They smile and duck their heads or offer me compliments on the costume on the streets, and in the office, if they know me, they compliment and ask questions, and why yes, I did make it myself.

Okay, so vanity's not terribly Jedi-like. But it's damn sure fun.
