So my research elbow got jogged by the second viewing of PotC, and the desire to sort of pin down the dating of the movie (and the sudden crossover with the Three Musketeers at the end) (As much as one can with a movie based one a *ride*. Thanks, Lori.)

We start with a Short History of Tortuga, move onto Port Royal, Jamaica and detour slightly to Sir Henry Morgan, a pirate of note who became the deputy governor of Jamaica, and played rather a large part in the histories of both towns.

I'm thinking mid 1670s, maybe 1680s. Charles II was king of England, Louis XIV king in France. (It is, it *is* the Musketeers!)

I especially love this line:

Even after women joined the buccaneers, matelotage continued with a partner sharing his wife with his matelot.

Canon threesome!

WHEE! Thank you *so* much! I was thinking about trying to figure out what year this was set in, just to *know*, but of course I hadn't even the slightest idea of where to start.

And if Jack, Will and Elizabeth were Musketeers, which one would be which?

(Also, Jack could totally be a governor. Barbosa called him the governor of the deserted rum island! Foreshadowing! Just the idea of Jack in charge of anything amuses me greatly. *bee hee hee*)

Um, I should say, Jack in charge of anything that's, you know, *not a pirate ship* amuses me greatly. ^_^

I was having a discussion getting out of the movie about when it would be set, and I was pulling shit out of my ass trying to figure it out, so I finally gave up and looked it up.

And if Jack, Will and Elizabeth were Musketeers, which one would be which?

I started out thinking that Will had mugged D'Artagnan on his way to save Jack from the gallows and claim Elizabeth (lamest part of the movie), but he could easily take the part. (Except for not being French) And Jack has to be Porthos. Which leaves Elizabeth with Aramis and Athos, neither of which she fits. And certainly not Milady deWinter. Hrmm.

Hee :)

You inspired me: there I was, pulling hald-remembered history out of my ass, so I had to go find things to back myself up (or disprove my theories entirely - it does happen on occasion)
